Thomas Y. Crowell (1836-1904) was an American publisher and founder of the Thomas Y. Crowell Company. He began his career as a bookseller in Boston in 1856, and in 1876 he founded his own publishing company. Crowell was known for publishing books aimed at a mass market, focusing on high-quality literature at a moderate price. He was one of the first publishers to use cloth binding for books, instead of leather or board. Crowell's success led to the publication of numerous classics, such as Charles Dickens, Nathaniel Hawthorne, and Mark Twain. In 1903, one year before his death, Crowell sold his company to an English firm, and it eventually merged with Harper & Row to form HarperCollins. Today, the company is known for publishing popular and respected works in various fields, including literature, history, and religion.
